Information For Those Applying For A Delaware Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) and Delaware CDL License

Those drivers holding a Delaware CDL learner's permit must be accompanied by a licensed CDL driver when operating a commercial motor vehicle that the driver is being trained to operate.

Delaware Permit expiration and extensions:

A Delaware CDL learner's permit is valid for six months. You can extend the Delaware CDL learner's permit only once for an additional six months. You must apply for an extension at the Delaware DMV before the expiration date and pay a $5.00 fee.

All Delaware CDL knowledge tests are by walk-in only and can be completed at any division facility. At a minimum an applicant will complete the General Knowledge test. Depending on the class of license or endorsements you are applying for, there may be additional testing.

Delaware CDL Skills Test:

All Delaware CDL skills test are by appointment only and can only be made once you have held your Delaware CLP for a minimum of 14 days. Call the following numbers to schedule a Delaware CDL skills test: Dover (302) 744-2505, Georgetown (302)853-1000, Wilmington (302) 433-3200, Delaware City (302) 326-5005. You are required to provide and test in a vehicle representative of the vehicle you will be driving. Please be on time for the test because the schedule is tight and we may not be able to work you in if you are late. You must bring the vehicle registration card and valid insurance card for the vehicle that you will drive during the test. Your learner's permit and the driver's license of the person accompanying you must also be reviewed. When taking the Delaware CDL skills test you must pass each part of the test before going to the next part. A Delaware CDL learner's permit is valid for six months. Delaware CDL Written Knowledge Tests
You will need to pass the Delaware Knowledge Tests that are required for the class of license, restriction, and endorsements you wish to possess. A general knowledge test for the Class A or Class B and C license must be successfully completed by all CDL applicants. The information needed to pass these tests is contained in the FREE Delaware CDL Handbook. Please read and study this manual carefully.
  • Class A - 70 Questions (50 GK + 20 Combination Vehicles) - Skills test required.
  • Class B - 50 Questions - Skills test required.
  • Class C - 50 Questions - Skills test required for bus, school bus and air brakes vehicles..
  • Passenger Endorsement - 20 questions - Skills test required in bus.
  • School Bus Endorsement - 25 questions - Skills test required in school bus.
  • Doubles/Triples Endorsement - 20 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Tank Vehicle Endorsement - 20 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Hazardous Materials Endorsement - 30 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Air Brake Restriction Removal - 25 questions - Additional skills test in vehicle with Air Brakes.
