There are THREE parts to the North Carolina CDL Skills Test
You must obtain a
North Carolina CLP (commercial learners permit) prior to taking your North Carolina CDL skills test.
North Carolina Basic Control Skills Tests
- Straight line backing
- Offset right or left backing
- Alley dock backing
The backing control skills information for each representative "type"
vehicle is found in Section 12 of the
Free
North Carolina CDL Handbook (Commercial Driver's License Manual).
The three-part North Carolina CDL skills tests must be scheduled (often more than a week ahead).
They are given either by a North Carolina state tester or by a North Carolina state approved third party
tester. Depending on where you live, you will either have to provide a proper
vehicle or one will be provided for you. This may vary from location to location.
