You must obtain and maintain your CDL in your state of residence. You must currently hold a valid regular drivers license in your state of residence. You must pass applicable written tests (based upon the type of commercial vehicles that you will be driving and the types of loads that you will carry. You must provide a DOT medical certificate, pay the statutory fees and you will be issued a CDL permit. The CDL permit will allow you to drive the type of commercial vehicles that you are permitted for - with a CDL holder present in the passenger seat of the vehicle. The vast majority of CDL holders did not go through a truck driving school. Truck driving schools average about $4200.00 and are generally priced between $3000.00 and $8000.00. Most people get their "hands on" experience behind the wheel with a friend, relative or employer who have access to a representative-type vehicle and who hold a valid CDL for that type of vehicle. This saves thousands of dollars. If you do not have the means of getting this "hands on" experience, you may have to choose a truck/bus driving school.
